What do you see? To many this is a perfect example of beautiful countryside. Me, I see a barren grass monoculture, a land once ancient forest, remaining native species clinging to existence pushed out for domesticated foreign animals, the last trees, a sad reminder of the past.

And people wonder why bird populations are in decline. Next time you're in a museum, take a look at old paintings depicting the countryside. There are birds _everywhere_. Literature from the time says the same. The decline is gradual, new generations do not to recognise the scale of it.

It's interesting how much my aesthetic sense has changed since I became a vegan and read and thought more about the reality of what I'm seeing. I have a completely different response to this landscape, and similar ones around me, than I would have in 2010.
