It was supposed to be Creedal actually oops. I'm no expert. As I understand it, a creedal Nation is a nation that is defined by commitment to certain ideals that are realized through forms and laws. Alternatively, one might talk about a nation as being defined by its culture or some other feature.

In my view, it's key to think of a nation as being different than a state. Rather, a nation describes a group of people who are then represented/governed by a state. This is a long way of saying that what JD Vance is asking is," who's really an American?". You can guess what his answer is.

Talking Points Memo has also corrected it. That said: 1) Who the fuck says "creedal" when they could just say "a nation based purely on a creed"? 2) Even if he didn't *actually* use weird old-timey racialized language, he's still pushing a two-tiered notion of Americanness. So yeah, fuck this guy.

Correction: This piece originally misquoted Vance's description of an America based purely in the principles of the Declaration of Independence. He described that vision as one of a The corrected text now on TPM.

Might mean "creedal," IE, a nation united by a shared creed rather than any ethnicity. Seems to be a word Christian Nationalists are into.

Yes I misspelled it, sorry. You're correct that it's a concept I mostly see employed by the academically inclined Christian nationalists
