A lot of comments here are despicable. Apparently empathy stops when it’s a young boy, who are responsible for hundreds of years of oppression. If it was any other demographic this place would be up in arms, and rightfully so.

It’s not that there’s no empathy for boys - as in, children. It’s a call for adult males to step up & model some decency, for parents to proactively raise their boys for the world they actually live in.

Content like this comment is usually where I take a break from Bluesky. This is usually such a welcoming place, it’s hard to imagine a left leaning 15 year old boy stumbling upon a bunch of strangers unironically telling him to man up/suck it up as if it’s the first time he’s heard that.

To me it’s a good example of why morons like Tate have made inroads so quickly. To continue your example, now imagine that boy finding some far-right leaning site where they say “they hate you, but we don’t. Join us.” People want to be liked and want community. It’s not hard to get from A-to-Z.

What about raising boys to have some CHARACTER? Arm them with defenses against the degeneracy of the manosphere.

Indeed. That’s why I always say poor people need to stop being so lazy. That will arm them against being evicted. The logic here on display is the exact same used by right wingers for generations. Maybe we as a society need to arm them instead of writing them off. Naw let’s just insult them.

I don’t see boys being insulted. I see the adults responsible for their welfare & upbringing being insulted.

No one is insulting children. Are you extending “boys” to mean 25 year old grown men?

That sounds great. To that end, it would be really great if spaces and communities where they could develop ‘character’ were more welcoming to boys/young men.

To start, it’d be good to recognize that it is a problem that boys are struggling, that the problem is systemic, and that it isn’t going to solve itself.

I think that’s a really hard road to get people to walk in left leaning spaces because they’re used to intersectionality where women are almost universally thought of as the ones getting screwed (which, fair for the most part). In this case the opposite is true so there’s resistance.

Women are not seen as “the ones getting screwed” unless the “space” has a large contingent of people who hold the belief that women exist solely for the pleasure & convenience of men. If so, wo is inevitable.

It seems like good next steps would be to raise up left leaning content creators that speak to the problems these young men face and work to make some left leaning spaces more welcoming to young men and boys.

How to make “left leaning spaces “( which is what, exactly?) more welcoming to young men? Especially the kind of young men currently drawn to the manosphere. Specific examples, please.

The alternative (eg personal accountability argument and even parental accountability argument) is basically expecting the problem to fix itself.

So you think “society” should fix the problem? You find that more specific & practical than “parents”? Do you mean government? Under theMAGA thugs? I shudder to think what that would entail.

Schools would be a start. According the article we’re commenting on, schools are failing boys. Educators should go back to the drawing board and figure out how they can correct this gap. I know the answer isn’t “boys should just stop being terrible”. That lets too many people off the hook.

What do you think schools should do? You seem to have given this a lot of thought yet have zero constructive suggestions other than “other people should do something.”

I see zero good faith from you, but I’ll bite. Schools tend to be focused on sit down classroom time which has developmentally been shown to not be good for boys. Adding in practical instruction and more physical activity would do a lot shift schools to being more welcoming to boys.

I raised 2 boys both of whom now have boys of their own. Lots of different personalities, given that all boys (& girls) are unique individuals. All do/did well in school. The reason: education is TOP priority. No blaming teachers. No whining. How about that?

All kids benefit from some physical activity, not just boys. That’s why schools nowadays have far more activity during the day then they did back in the day when boys surpassed girls. It’s not near that simple. How many kids have you raised?

Yes I, personally, believe in societal solutions to systemic problems. Since 50%+ of kids are in MAGA households, it’s kind of up to the rest of us (society) to introduce these ideas.

I get the need to vent but I wish it was a little more targeted. Maybe it’s too much to expect of online discourse? Maybe “masculine” and “feminine” spaces are just doomed to mirror each other.
