On my way to a building site. The first charger was blocked by an ICE car 😡 The second charger didn’t work, lucky with the third one 🤞 I’ll miss these coffees for €1.75

Bonjour from central France 🇫🇷 The journey from Northern Spain has taken me through some pretty landscapes, especially in the Occitania region with its mountains and the famous Millau viaduct (one of Norman Foster’s better designs) Effortless EV charging ✅ The cakes are very tempting 🍰

Combine EV charging and French patisserie and you have a looming obesity epidemic

Driving through Paris on Friday afternoon wasn’t ideal Cycling, on the other hand, was amazing 👌 The separated bike lanes make such a difference to how people can move through places

Some lush pastries for breakfast while charging Bob. I could get used to this but I’d probably end up a chunky monkey Next stop Calais for the LeShuttle train back to UK 🇬🇧

The final top up ⚡️ in Calais before taking the train and the Engie Vianeo charger got stuck 😬 Quick call to their customer service to release the cable meant I didn’t miss my Le Shuttle train to UK 🇬🇧 A few more dots added to the @octopus.energy EV charging history map this week

Love that the map’s filling up with even more dots 🌍⚡️ Safe travels back to the UK — what a tour it’s been! 🐙

Safely back home, Bob’s done well Total trip stats 🧮 🛣️ Distance: 2335 miles/ 3760 km 🏎️ Average speed: 52.3 mph/ 84.2kmh ⚡️ Consumption: 4.2miles/kWh 14.8kWh/100km 🦶 CO2 footprint: 177kg (vs 565kg for flights or 132kg for trains)

Looks like a great journey and EVs can be very efficient if you keep your speed down which it looks like you did. Planes are terrible. But trains are considerably more efficient than EVs. I think you got your numbers the wrong way. Maybe just 31.2kg of co2.

I've used 35g/km CO2 value for trains, which is a bit lower than this graph

As with cars there is Deisel ⛽️ & Electric ⚡️so it is with trains. SNCF state French 🇫🇷 trains as 8.3g/km. If we’re picky this impressively low French figure is likely achieved from the electricity source. But Bob too has been running on nuclear ☢️ and you may use 49g/km for your journey.

What is staggering is how much the co2 emissions from your journey by EV are affected by the country you travel through and the co2/kWh for that country’s electricity grid. France 🇫🇷nuclear + renewables <27g/kWh Switzerland🇨🇭hydro <10g/kWh UK 🇬🇧 gas + renewables >100g/kWh Poland 🇵🇱 coal!!! >600g/kWh

I was in Paris two weeks ago and was amazed how many cycle lanes had been installed - and where used - since 5 years ago. It's terrific to see!

Yes!!! Riding through in person is such a revelation. You really don't "get" it until you're on the ground here. Perfect timing as well. The weather yesterday was beautiful!

The first one has "out of order" sign on it which is presumably older than the ICE car presence

My recommendations for charging in Spain are Ionity, Zunder and BP pulse/Iberdrola (which is your third time lucky one, I think). Endesa are a bit hit and miss, but also generally OK.

Thanks Ben. Got some more blunders today, but managing OK. It seems Spain has some catching up to do when it comes to EV charging infrastructure

It definitely does, although it's improving quickly. With planning, we didn't have any problems on our long summer holiday trip, but you have fewer good options to choose between than in other countries.
