The GOP has been redefining political language since the 1980's. It's all meant to normalize political action against their perceived enemies. They haven't been part of a democracy for decades

the "moral" "majority" and religious right buying their own tv networks to spread their propaganda and normalize their attacks and bigotry by making people hear it enough that it does shock anymore, the same time we stopped calling them jesus freaks and republicans ran with it and them hand in hand
