Yep.

I agreed the US was heading for dictatorship, but I did not have the imagination, that it would be a communist dictatorship where it now seems to be headed.
1933-2025
@kamalaharris.com laid it all out before the election, but apathy and ElonMusk rigging the voting machines has put us where we are… with a Fascist Moron in the White House!!!
I will never get over the large percentage of non-voters. They're infuriating.
I know! It pissed me off so much!!! How can you not care enough to vote!
According to the Pew Research Center and others. If the nonvoters had voted, the OT would have won with a slightly higher margin. This means that the problem is deeply rooted in the US population.
It's because of misinformation. (Fox lies)
As Mrs Applebaum states, everything was completely transparent and predictable. In Russia, the regime forcefeeds the people with insane propaganda. In the US, people gobbles it down on their own free will / Denmark
and lack of education & critical thinking. Good read on the psychology of masses: bsky.app/profile/germ...
I agree 100%. Countless people warned. Justice failed on every level bsky.app/profile/chri...
He'll be known as Chairman Moan.
Some Americans have not heard of Truth Social. Any way of staving off that knowledge-desert?
No shit!
🤬🤬🤬
Trump and the MAGA movement are, by nature, neo-fascist. The continued refusal of many elites and media outlets to call it what it is will cost America dearly.
thank you SO SO much for the work you do to promote democracy and to fight fascism
Yes he would & has. 🤨
Trump is a reverse Midas: everything he touches turns to shit. I fear for the future of the Republican Party, the United States, democracy, the economy, science, and the Western world. Trump is not a revolutionary, he's an arsonist.
Thank you, Ms. Applebaum. You're a guiding light.
He's modelling Hitler. Ivana told us he kept inspirational writings on his bed side table. It would be comical, if not so dire, that America is letting a made up orange clown with the charisma of a toilet brush lead it into fascism.
He is Marmite man. Unfortunately, for millions of Americans he IS charismatic and not at all terrifying.
📌
Many of us have been predicting this slide to fascism in US and UK since 2016. It's no comfort to be proved right. France and Germany will probably follow because the progressive side of politics prefer to squabble amongst themselves about issues in the middle east and toilets.
It would be overly pessimistic to assume that America’s authoritarian drift will be replicated elsewhere. Even in the States, Trump’s overall approval rating has dipped below 40% and he faces a lot of powerful opposition.
Week before the election I got mocked on X by a longtime follower for saying Trump would have concentration camps and end democracy. Only thing that confuses me is why it wasn't obvious to everyone. He said it out loud and printed signs at his convention saying exactly this.
Note that I didn't say Trump IS Hitler, just that he was deliberately using language borrowed from Mein Kampf (immigrants "poisoning the blood" of the nation) which foretold extremist intentions
His new hat slogan comes from Mussolini. The fact that our media and opposition politicians are failing to point out these parallels is indicative of the depth of our problems.
Yes, and he's surrounded by people who have drunk the flavorade of mythic history.
Trump is not Hitler, but he's definitely Hitler-ing.
Don't forget vermin - saying people were vermin who needed to be rooted out. That's straight up Hitler-ing.
It's like they say, history does not repeat itself, but it surely rhymes...
he is a sui generis fascist
A distinction worthy of note.
No need for the correction… he’s just like Hitler.. I would not be surprised if these deportations lead mass murder. We need to stop him.
All dictators, like cult leaders, are ultimately the same. They use division and hatred and promises to keep them safe from wrongdoers to keep their people in line, without them ever realising they're being controlled, used and subjugated
Of course he isn't, Hitler wasn't working for a foreign power, he is Vidkun Quisling.
…so just talks like a duck then
Trump did two "Roman salutes" from the top of the White House. Imagine a president doing that in any other era. Imagine if Nixon had done it. All we can say is that Trump isn't LITERALLY Hitler.
Trump is worse than Hitler. Literally. I write this on the 81st anniversary of my mom's cattle car journey from the Lodz ghetto to Auschwitz. Trump has a more malevolent personality than Hitler's. Darker, more dangerous.
During his divorce proceedings from his first wife, she testified that he slept with Hitler’s speeches by the bed. That was reported in 1995, I believe. Not shocking. Ugh.
He and Trump have so much in common.
JD Vance said, “Trump is America’s Hitler”
As his British counterpart, the unspeakable Farage is doing too. Common human decency seems to be going out the window & they claim to be “Christian” too, presumably on the basis the world has learned nothing since the crusades
Andreas @puettmann.bsky.social coined the term „christianists“ for these hypocritical fanatics who resemble islamists.
"Christo-Fascists" does it too. Minted by Dorothee Sölle, a German theologian in the 70s.
So does Bjoern Hoecke in Germany from the #AfD “Everything for Germany” (NAZI SA slogan) “Berlin’s Holocaust memorial is a ‘monument of shame.” (2017 Speech)
#Hoecke Plagiarizing Hitler's "Mein Kampf" (1 of 2) “A few corrections and small reforms won’t be enough, but the German absoluteness will guarantee that we will tackle the matter thoroughly and fundamentally.”
(2 of 2) “The longing of the Germans for a historical figure, who will once again heal the wounds of the people, overcome the strife, and put things in order is deeply rooted in our soul.”
No need to stress the distinction. Those who can see Trump clearly already understand, and for those who worship Trump, they will disingenuously claim that it’s a distinction without a difference.
He is acting like Hitler now.
He's quoted hitler verbatim on occasion, and coveted his generals. So..
I can clarify...Trump is not Hitler, just like him in many ways. #Hitlerlite
Trump is actually worse than Hitler; darker, more malevolent, less rational. Study their lives. I write this on the 81st anniversary of my mom's cattle car journey from the Lodz ghetto to Auschwitz.
I have been saying that Trump is worse than Hitler for a long time. My conclusion is based on analytical psychology and diving deeply into their formative years. Trump may be the most dangerous man ever to exist: A U.S president displaying the Dark Triad and sadism.
In the late 20s/ early 30s, Hitler wasn't 'Hitler' either.
True, but removing senior government officers on account of race, sending the Army to occupy cities governed by the opposition, siding with totalitarian North Korea against democratic countries, and disappearing undesirables into concentrations camps is more than just talking like a fascist.
certainly, this is demonstrably true
Ms Applebaum please I need the lottery numbers for tonight's drawing!
Anyone with half a useful brain didn't need anyone to tell them the EXCREMENT RAPIST would destroy the country in 2nd stolen presidency.
But the idiots still voted for this, the orange man baby dictator literally told everyone with his incoherent rambling what he was going to do.
Word for word. Absolutely sickening to watch this happen. Horrible seeing it coming and watching the train wreck unfold in 3D all around us. Infuriating that half the country, congressional republicans & SCOTUS are cogsigning it all. Why?
never underestimate the ignorance of the American electorate
For congressional Republicans - fascist tendencies among some, moral cowardice and graft among most of the rest.

it also takes invested / corrupt appeasers to enable an autocrat... itc D elite (lobbied up pelosi, schumer et al) and most Rs.. capitulating given the history (eg~ Weimar etc) bsky.app/profile/auma...
I think it was apparent to anyone with a baseline understanding of history and the time and inclination to pay attention. Unfortunately the current system makes both of these difficult for a vast majority of Americans. To the unlucky few, it’s been an approaching freight train at 3 AM
It seems to be the baseline understanding of history that was lacking in far too many.
Agreed. I’m fortunate to have had teachers who taught the reasons why things happened; it sounds like most people were taught a list of dates and major battles and such.
The Nuremberg-style rally at Madison Square Garden a few days before the election was basically a declaration of war on everybody they didn’t like. Anyone paying attention knew they were serious and it was going to be bad. Still some surprises in the details and the speed with which they’re moving.
He's only doing everything he said he was gonna do.
Well you hit that nail on the head.
yoi sure predicted the targeting of journalists in gaza
There's no comparison. Give him a few more years, though
Hitler didn't start out as a bloodthirsty killing machine, that took a good 10 years.
Very few understand this as well as you do, Anne.💜
Agree
As with most dictators, people don't take it seriously because it sounds so absurd - until it becomes reality!
Exactly, that must mean that the US population wants what is going on right now in their country. Is there another explanation? I'm of course ruling out that the US voters are ignorant morons. / Denmark
A slight majority of those who voted elected that madman in 2024. We have tens of millions of ignorant people, a very poor education system, vast right wing propaganda networks. From what I've read, you have some rotten people in Denmark too...just not the majority of the population.
There is an increasing chance that Trump will indeed create another Holocaust.
most of us predicted that as well
it's a dangerous game being played
Playbook. Tyrants will always go down.
I know.
Forgive me if I'm wrong because I don't see many examples of it, but I believe this is what is called journalism
It's also the death knell of peaceful transfer of power that has been a norm for a quarter century. Political retribution is direct opposite of peaceful transition. This has been in process since the Civil War, the ultimate rejection of peaceful transition. What's next? bsky.app/profile/anne...
People think transition happens on Jan 20 and that is that. But when one side (Republicans) decide to reject it and respond with political retribution, it doesn't end until one side or the other is vanquished. That's always been why peaceful transition has been a sacred novelty in the new world.
Also 2, this guy and his cohort seem able to bypass the checks and balances in govt, skirting every US law and norm. The shifts in foreign policy to befriend traditional enemies is appalling. Have presidents always wielded that much power?
Also, Trump seems to be ramping up changes and picking up the pace lately. Some say it's to deflect from Epstein, but I think they're implementing a tornado of plans from Project 2025 that will leave everyone reeling and without any coherent response.
So did I. 💁🏼♀️
What was not predicted was how non-existent the American public's reaction to it has been.
The last 8 months have felt like reading every single dystopian sci-fi novel ever written… at the same time.
But in all of them the public sees the oppression and sides with the plucky resistance.
... I'm waiting for that part.
