NASA just won an Emmy for our live broadcast of the total solar eclipse last year. We produced a documentary film about the James Webb Space Telescope that's out in theaters and on Netflix. We have podcasts, we write feature stories. People wear the agency logo on t-shirts. We're still getting cut.

I wear my NASA shirts (yes, multiple!) all the time and each time I do it reminds me of the awe and wonder of learning about space through the accomplishments of the agency, and seeing the rockets up close at the Kennedy Space Center. I also hope it inspires others — and they do ask!

On the other hand, you heard that phrase and I suspect haven't really reasoned about it. I think that if you did for a bit you would realise why it is untrue. Also, it is originally a complaint about athiests being unreasonable, so therefore Swift couldn't convince them of god through reason.

I read the thread that this was cross-posted to, and your comments made me think much more deeply about it. I think there is a variation of this idea that I still support, but I posted that on the other thread. Unless someone requests it here, I'm content to let this thread end.

NASA isn’t getting cut because it failed to tell it’s sorry. MEDICAID isn’t getting cut because it failed to tell its story. These cuts are very unpopular. They’re being made b/c the ruling cult doesn’t care what people want, & also because what people want is not closely tied to who gets elected.

National Parks are one of the single-most popular things the federal government does and the administration is still seeking a 40% cut to our budget. The idea that this is a failure on our part is an elaborate ploy to make excuses for these monsters.

Yes! This! NASA has a "brand" with a logo so well-known people wear it in t-shirts and hats worldwide. Our NASA ESCI budget is getting cut by over half. It doesn't matter how you "sell" it to the public.

The problem isn’t selling the public on nasa. The public likes nasa and many individual programs which are being cut. The problem is informing the public that voting Republican has destroyed many things that are worth preserving. That’s a universal problem which nasa cannot contribute to fixing

Gold Trash Can @goldtrashcan.bsky.social

Ideally nasa leadership would get in front of TV cameras and tell the public that republicans are destroying our agency but then they’d be fired immediately. The underlying problem here is a do nothing congress that is letting the executive do generational damage to our federal government.

I'd say the problem is that people don't understand the scientific process, and the GOP thinks everything should be privatized. The Earth Sciences, in particular, get extra flack for keeping track of the climate and talking about how it changes. Better education funding could help but 🤷‍♀️

Also! This particular cut is being overlooked because of the MASSIVE Medicaid cuts. I don't think a lot of people realize how much else is on the chopping block. This is a disastrous bill on every level. It's unpopular with the people, but our reps are still voting for it. They don't care.

The media has, for a very long time now, practiced this reversal of victim and offender in service to right-wing talking points. And they are very good at it. NYT is one of the worst ones, but definitely not the only one. It's tricky to defend against.

I actually ended up at Goddard on accident as a kid when visiting DC. My dad did the classic refusing to ask for directions thing (in the days before Cell phones,) and we ended up at Goddard after seeing a sign off the beltway.
