One of the things we should probably acknowledge about Harry Potter is that as an IP it was hard carried by some incredibly talented people, Alfonso Cuaron directed the 3rd entry between Y tu mamá también and Children of Men, it was kinda lightning in a bottle that they're not gonna recapture.

If I'm real with you, it's the only thing from the franchise which I ever thought was particularly great. I was never a Potter-head but that film didn't suck, basically entirely because of Cuaron and the performers.
The story had to be carried by a lot of talented people because the books weren't very good. Their popularity was carried by a bunch of barely literate gen x and older millennials who preferred fantasy over the reality they were living in.
Even without the TERF stuff this entreprise was doomed from the start. It’ll never escape the shadow of the movie. This is just WB trying to squeeze more blood from the stone because Fantastic Beasts was a costly failiure due to JK being a bad writer.

I think it's striking how Cuarón's film codifies the aesthetic of HP in a way that the franchise still hasn't escaped to this day, in all it's marketing and games and so on. It's been ever-diminishing copies since then, and I don't believe this show's brave enough to do its own thing.

The first two entries were directed by Chris Columbus, y'know the director of Home Alone? Guy knew how to make a damn good movie. Which is why it's so baffling they're trying to make a new adaptation. Those movies, made by folks at the top of their, game are the best the franchise will ever be.
My only guess is that Warner Bros is still upset that the Fantastic Beasts movies were going to continue to decline in box office returns, and so opted to cash in on easy nostalgia for a few years. Three, at tops, I’m guessing. Hopefully less, because Rowling is scum.

These filmmakers knew how to trim the fat. Good movie adaptations in general trim the fat. These shows usually pad it out. Live action One Piece works because it’s a breezy abridged version for those who have never tried One Piece while still being enjoyable for fans.

I have to begrudgingly admit that PofA is one of the better-made films in the franchise. It uses all the techniques Cuaron uses in Children of Men, such as pulling the camera away from the action to show some interesting little tableau on the side. It almost convinces you Harry Potter isn't shit.
I've maintained that the show is both going to look terrible and going to make all the mistakes Fantastic Beasts did with trying to be serious and dark while showcasing all of the worst parts of the books that got cut out of the movies. If this flops, it's the end of Rowling's power.

The franchise is just JK comming up with a series of hit-or-miss setpieces that WAY more talented people actually managed to bring to life. Those movies are going to be the best version of the story and world, period. Why would a fan of [Franchise] wait however many years waiting on a new season, for a story already told in numerous already released movies? Movies (and books) that are probably dirt cheap second hand, and streaming.
Say, hypothetically, I'm a parent. Let's pretend I don't know the author's present obsession. So, my imaginary kiddos go, "Mom, please can we watch that series?" I'd say, "Ok, kids, you wanna wait years to see that story finish? Or read the books? Or, you know, all the movies are already out."
I can almost guarantee, most kids, with short attention spans, and very little patience, are going be squealing for the movies. Next thing ya know, the whole family is dragged into a nearly 20 hour movie binge, probably over the end of a week. Food, drinks, comfy blankets, the works, as a family.
But since I do know, it's just not something, if I were a parent, I'd do. There are other, better stories, with richer worlds, to enjoy, without the awful baggage of that particular author. So, basically, going to wait, and not pay much attention as the series probably falls flat on its face.

I think it's more like "This is a copy of a copy". It could have BILLIONS of dollars behind it, but the truth is that not only have we read the books, but we have seen the movies and thus have at least TWO different iterations of the same characters in our heads.
Let's put aside any legit issues with the Franchise and creator and look at this from a commercial perspective. It makes SENSE from the coldest hardest, uncreative way possible to be like 'let's just do that...again' and expect the same if not BETTER results.

Like. Lucas dusted off his 20 year old franchise and decided “what if I told Vaders origin story?”. The Next Generation was set 100 years after the original and had entirely new characters. Comics reboot and retell and remix character stories at whim and have for decades.
Stuff changes! Artists change! Stories get told in new ways! But fucking Harry Potter will still be the same fucking because the only thing it can do it point out how more and more nakedly awful Rowling has become.

I always thought that was weird considering how much freeing Dobby was treated like a good thing in the second book. Younger me also had no idea that Rowling didn’t want people to side with Hermione. I ended up thinking, “These teachers and students sure are jerks.”
I watched the first film years and years ago. And it seemed like most of the movie was low stakes world building. Wand shopping, magic soccer, ect. Than the actual plot with the addictive magic mirror kicked on during the last 10 minutes. Pacing was never that bigoted asshole's strong suit.

She tried telling new stories with Fantastic Beasts and that fizzled out and died. It isn’t actually a very interesting universe, especially because Rowling seems so uninterested in following the implications of any of its lore to interesting places. It’s all throwaway bullshit.
No cosmology, no consistency, nobody showing any curiosity at what magic is or how it works. It can do anything the story needs it to. If you told a Wizarding World story set in 15th century China there would be no way to even show it’s a shared universe unless you shoehorn in a Hogwarts reference.

Part of it is her own stranglehold on the story and characters and world. The key to worlds that live beyond the boundaries is a specific story is lore, the hint of other stories that could be told, the idea that any given tale takes place in a space bigger than itself.
Look at what they've done with Warhammer 40k, the lore has created demand for entire genres of products for that IP beyond it's incredibly niche *actual game* like the 40k games have made so much more money than the tabletop makes

In the hands of engaging writers and editors and directors you can even take the original story and play with it, examine itself with it, examine What It Is by changing it. Anno does this effectively with the Rebuild of Evangelion because he changed and grew as a person between the series and films.

as someone who religiously read the books at 10 years old, its just like. Whatever. its alright fantasy but as soon as you dig a little its just full of weird idiosyncrasies and stereotypes and generally isn't very put together enough i tell the youth to read discworld instead

I think a great visual point to how much the movies carreid the francise is to look at the video games. The first two used the style of the books, but from the Prisoner of Azkaban on they shifted to the movies visual style.

Absolutely, TBH. The first two films, in my opinion, were kind of cinematic masterpieces. The score, the way shots were framed, sets were lit, and scenes were blocked, and the amount of talent on hand, including a lot of established actors.
The overlap in cast between the first few HP films and Black Adder is surprisingly large, for example. There's just so much that went into making it work, and trying to make it again without any of the talent purely out of spite is going to go exactly as well as expected TBCH.
