"The coward restricted replies!" I'm a relatively well known trans woman on the internet, I get extremely violent and descriptive death threats, self-harm imagery, real life images of people being murdered, you're god damn right I'm restricting replies, it really shouldn't be a mystery as to why.
Also, like, in public if you hear people talking you don’t just like randomly join in their convo. Turning restricted replies on explicitly says “This is an A-B conversation you need to C yourself out of” - it’s setting clear boundaries and expectations and that’s groovy
I absolutely don't blame you for wanting to restrict replies if that's what you've been receiving.

One of the best things this app has to offer is it's moderation. options and block lists. People deserve to be online without being abused.
Literally the only time I've been mildly annoyed with someone restricting replies is when they asked a question and said they were genuinely looking for an answer, and turned off replies and quotes before anyone replied or quoted.

I'm a simple guy, almost 100% regular, and I still get tons of insults and threats on here and on x... I can't imagine how many an outspoken trans person gets. Unfathomable.

There is a group of very ill intent people that is very angry here that we can do the internet equivalent of shutting my fucking door in your face. And personally, for me, it fells as gratifying.
Honestly I think Dan Slott put it best when he said "Would you allow someone on the street to talk to you like that? If the answer is no then you shouldn't accept that on social media"
Not only do I not want to see any of that, I feel a responsibility to my audience not to let them see it either, I've got over 30K followers on here, I don't want them exposed to that kind of content just for interacting with my posts, and yes it happens on here too. So I close down replies.

Bluesky is definitely a better experience on the whole, and safety tools make it so that content is far more effectively hidden, but it's still an issue. But no, I'm not restricting replies because I'm afraid of debate or any such thought-terminating cliche, it's about the threats and harassment.

Using existing moderation tools to moderate ones experience and enforcing ones own boundaries is only normal and more people should do it.
Also, "restricted to accounts that follow her" is like the lowest bar of restriction you can possibly set.
Bluntly though, cis people just don't get it. And I don't mean "don't get it" as in they don't understand, I mean they literally don't get the constant abuse, threats, and harassment we receive, they can't fathom the extent of it because they're not on the receiving end of it.

It's funny, I've had people assume I'm trans and hurl abuse at me for it then change their time when they find out I'm cis. Suddenly I'm someone they can convince is wrong about trans rights somehow rather than just a hatesink. It's like a fucking light switch how fast the abuse gets turned off.

Irl I'd tell people to fuck off and I'd get tf away from them if they insisted on engaging with me when I didn't want it. Social media should be no different, just because you have a window into someone else's world doesn't mean you have a right to shout through it.

Also, my understanding is that "coward locked replies" is meant to be reserved exclusively for dorks who deliberately pick fights with the broader user base, and THEN lock up when they can't handle the smoke they've brought upon themselves. Not, y'know, the people they pick fights with.
I will almost always interpret someone being angry about a person using moderation tools on their posts to protect themselves as "I really wanted to keep harrassing you"
So many people are absolutely incensed at the idea that others not only don't want to speak to them or hear from them, but that we're allowed to preemptively say we don't want a conversation. We can curate our feeds however we like!
