Before anyone lumps New Mexico in with the Red States, poverty in New Mexico is a result of Federal and Corporate exploitation, not backwards beliefs or culture. Our housing has also been wholly monopolized by Wall Street, so people can't afford the rent out of no fault of their own.

New Mexico has two major universities, a very high-quality community college system, and New Mexico specializes in Nuclear Science, yet our education scores suffer because our public schools are being financially starved out and No Child Left Behind is still screwing us over.

Politically, New Mexico largely is Solid Blue, but the descendants of Texan invaders occupy the Southeast of the State and have always had priorities aligned with the South and are widely racist and MAGA. This invasive demographic historically keeps New Mexico from leaps in progress.

In short, your average New Mexican works much harder and studies much harder than the average American, but attempts to modernize and invest in meaningful gains for our infrastructure and children's futures is being held back by the worst of Texans like the worst of the English were the Pilgrims.
