Historical reasons I might understand (as in being a member of a culture/ group that has suffered b/c of another group), but how does anyone come to a point where, I don’t know, Japanese culture/ history is to be valued higher than Chinese culture/ history (or any other combination of nations)???
Japan‘s history is kind of crazy (and glorious), China’s history is wild (and glorious and kind of crazy) and so on and on. Even thinking of China‘s history as some kind of unified story is totally besides the point. The territory is huge with so many different people. Totally mind boggling.
You would be surprised as to how many people I’ve had to have the conversation of, yes I understand but I’m Korean and we have a different relationship with Japanese media. It’s exhausting.
Oh, I can only imagine. People really, really need to absorb a lot more history than they is being served on a standard European or American education menu.
And also not dismiss or ignore the education that’s given to them and dismiss it as someone just being “too sensitive”. It’s one thing if they just don’t know. It’s another thing when they chose to weaponize their ignorance and use stereotypes to double down.
Oh yes, absolutely. It’s taken way too long, but finally some of my fellow Europeans and me (! … it’s taken me way too long, too!) begin to realise what „colonisation“ actually meant or means.
I’m so glad to hear it. My other half is Celtic and I think it would be an easy parallel if we also learning more about our own histories too
