I have a theory, probably better-developed than that paper, that the reason these people are so obsessed with that particular word is because the last four letters of the word form another word that they really like

Having interacted with these kinds of people fair amount, I'm pretty sure that's a coincidence. Big motivators are that it sounds more scientific + there's a bunch of 20th century Ashkenazi intellectuals who became very well known in the Anglophone world because that's where they fled Hitler to.
