Huh. Maybe I just use it wrong, but I'm not alone in that if so. I suppose I could describe palaces rather than towers in my figures of speech, just to avoid confusion or miscommunication.

You wouldn’t be the first if that’s the case. I wonder if it’s become a common misuse, since it’s come up so often. Wouldn’t be the first time a term has become detached from its meaning. It’s just new to me.

Language is constantly evolving. Honestly, if a phrase loses it's anti intellectual association, that's a win. Still, I'll try to avoid it to avoid confusion.
