The article is just a short come-on to pull you into some pseudoscience. The video looks to me like the gentleman has had DBS. That's why he has the unit hanging around his neck. That temporarily gives the clinician access to the controller to turn it on and off and adjust it.

Yes, my father-in-law had this surgery decades ago. The magnetic wand allowed him to just "turn-off" the tremors for the rest of his life. It does nothing to the other numerous symptoms but stopping tremors is HUGE. He lived to be 84.

Actually the Michael J Fox foundation is one of the biggest funders of Parkinson’s research (including deep brain stimulation)
In my Neurology residency and in my wife's experience as a Neuro nurse, we saw countless cases of Parkinsonism. This brought tears to our eyes.

I think this video is from Bristol, he is an ex Royal Marine and the medical professional definitely has a Bristol accent. I presume a lot of the R&D is in Germany. Great either way as you say.

This is so wonderfully touching. Stepping aside of where the technology is from, it looks like this treatment is being undergone within the UK NHS, which provides taxpayer funded healthcare for all and is cherished by all.
I'd trust a chip implanted by a German scientist before I got neuralink. Something seems off about trusting a guy whose spaceships keep exploding and whose "cybertruck" is full of engineering issues that makes me think letting him put probes in a human brain will have consequences.

The NIH funding for the Brain Research Through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative - which funds most of the DBS research, was just cut. It is likely completely defunded with the 40% cut to the NIH.
This is really great stuff. 🥲 The Michael J. Fox Foundation has invested over $9M in DBS R&D. Fox himself had DBS surgery in 2002, and most recently in 2023. He has a documentary out from his 2023 procedure, which I haven’t seen yet.

I have Essential Tremor, which is similar to Parkinson’s book effects a different part of the brain. I had the same surgery, called Deep Brain Stimulation, and it stopped my tremors. It’s not a cure but it treats the symptoms.
I have dystonia and I'm on the list for DBS surgery next year. It's not a cure as you say but if I get my quality of life back I'm happy with that. So glad it helped you

Yes, I had two surgeries , one on each side of the brain. There are leads that go from the top of my skull (connected to the implant in my brain) down my neck and into my upper chest to connect to the battery—one on each side. My surgeries were in 2015, and I had my batteries replaced in 2023.
I'm happy for you that it's helped you. It's helped me as well, although not as much as I had hoped, it's certainly better than nothing.
My late mother had DBS surgery for her Parkinsons back in 2012. The effect was immediate and massive, it gave her life back to her for the sadly few years she had left to live. Medical science is a true marvel of modern life.
Kudos to Germany and other countries that are still committed to funding scientific research. I am looking forward to America regaining its leadership role in it post-Trump.
