Unsolicited writing advice, no. 126: Ideas are worthless without hard work. The literary world is littered with the corpses of people with "ideas" who were unable or unwilling to put in the time and effort to develop them (or worse, expected someone else to do the work for them.)
That's my main challenge, like everyone I have lots of ideas but making stories out of them escapes me most of the time. How do you, yourself, develop a novel and write it, if you even go from 'idea' to text rather than have ideas as you write? When you're putting the work in, what is it you do?
Twyla Tharp said about dance, but it applies to writing as well, that you don't need one IDEA. You need many small ideas. A musical phrase. A series of steps. A talisman that the protagonist stumbles over... And then you ask yourself "where did this come from?" or "what happens next?" Repeatedly.
Yes, I've had hundreds of million-dollar ideas!
Fair enough - but having them killed seems a little extreme…

I get this all the time! "Oh! You write books? I have this great idea... Would you make it into a book for me?" Answer: "Heck no!" I tell them, "Ideas are brain farts... A dime a dozen. Go write your own dang book!"
