Also, the bacon, potatoes and cabbage thing. She did cook that, but never used cabbage, it was always swede. Not sure which is the "traditional" one but she was certainly Irish so perhaps it's a regional thing.

My mum was the same. Mashed swede. Which is a tradition the Brother carries on. I try and feed it to the cats
I'm sure someone out there cooks it in a way which isn't rank, but my natural instinct on seeing it is to recoil. The cats did nothing wrong, why you torture them so?
Ahem Exhibit One O’Malley brings in a live mouse. O’Malley drops said mouse and wanders off in search of his brother. Live mouse is returned to garden. O’Malley then spends rest of the day searching the house for said mouse
They're so evil aren't they? love them.
oh, undoubtedly, but...look at them!!!
The cat flap has become cat TV. They lie there and watch the garden before demanding to be let out the kitchen door.
They're lovely though, I'd forgive them anything
it can be done well but only by murdering the swede with black pepper and butter.
Oddly, swede works really well in a celeriac mash with a couple of tablespoons of seed mustard in it but we're properly into foodie wanker territory here.
in which case why not use a potato.
And that’s put the joke about feathers and chicken into mind
Also rhaphanidosis
My opinion of swedes and turnips is to observe that food was so short in WW1 Germany thanks to the British blockade that the winter of 1917 is still known as the Turnip Winter.
The only thing to say in their favour is that they are not parsnips.
going to have to fight you on this one, parsnips are lovely
I had a great dish with parsnip veloute in Paris once. They take spicing well in the oven too.
Fresh turnips are pretty good and they're extremely dependable if baked. The variety I've been growing this year have a lovely mustardy tang to them. Swede on the other hand is pretty difficult to raise above mediocrity.
Potato, bacon and cabbage done by someone who knows how to do it is absolutely delicious! Americans would hate it!!
Very true :)
Given current weather in Winchester the sound of barley, bacon, potatoes and cabbage in some kind of wonderful soup or stew is about what I’m craving this Monday morning
Still blue skies here :)
We had them till 20 mins ago! Def back to at least 3 seasons in one day here, if not 4!
Very true :)
I've got to go into town later and am dreading it. I've just washed my hair :-(
☔️☔️… yeah I’m heading for docs 1130 so hoping it stops soon!
