The next step is obvious: Elect an antipope and have him excommunicate the heretic in Rome.

If there's a US president who would pen an executive order to give themself the power to elect bishops...
Kings and Emperors should have three offices: Commander in Chief, supreme judge and highest priest.
Don't look at me, I'm Spanish, we are still pissed off about Franco's Nationalcatholicism.
He's probably got some spare failson who needs a church office.
There's not much that would bring me greater joy than getting to live though another Pope Fight. The world is on fire and fascism is on the rise, but at least I'd get to experience one of the sillier parts of the Medieval world first hand.
Only if we get Cadaver Synod 2: Electric Boogaloo.
Can you imagine them putting Francis' desecrated corpse on trial because he had the temerity to feed the poor?
I mean your laughing now but at the rate the World is going...why not have a good ecclastial schism.
Look, I'm German, and I can very much live without yet another war on the particular disagreement with the pope du jour.
I am german too and eh, if we die it might as well be funny.
Just burn down Magdeburg for old times sake, and defenestrate someone in Prague?
Like...can you imagine the memes?
I mean...have you seen Magdeburg recently? Not sure this would not be doing them a favour. Also could we innovate a bit and move the defenestration to Budapest? I have a candidate.
My memory about Magdeburg consists of freezing my butt off in the Christmas night in front of the Cathedral, because someone didn't read the schedule right and we were there 2 hours after the church closed. A bit of fire feels about right, come to think of it.
Also, to be a true defenestration of Prague it has to be (1) a religiously motivated (2) defenestration (3) in Prague, doesn't it?
Sight. You are right ofcourse. Tradition tradition.
It is for these moments that I want someone to make a gif of the moment in HBO's Chernobyl where Stellen Skarsgard's character, watching the (doomed) West German robot, amazed by the capabilities of German engineers, remarks simply, "Germans!"
Has...this happend to you before?
"Germans being German in amusing ways" happens fairly frequently on social media, yeah. The funny thing is, though I am excessively American, my ancestors were mostly Germans, coming over in the mid-/late-1800s.
From what i understand that is the case for a lot of americans. Also since i have your attention(maybe): thanks for your work, your Blog is amazing and has impacted my way of engaging with the World in pretty fundamental ways.
I think that's pretty much Trump's campaign promise, with the whole "sin of empathy" thing
Well, since Jesus was American don't you think the Pope should be too?
This scene flew to mind rather quickly... (Source: A Knight's Tale) www.youtube.com/watch?v=qn1B...
Hedge funds are already financing that, so yeah, that's where we're heading.
Tradcaths believe in a Warhammer 40k Space Pope fantasy. The actual pope always seems to disappoint them, with his calls for charity and compassion.
Well, Tradcaths take the position that the pope is not really Catholic.
What a surprise
To have to remind anyone about some passage as basic as the Good Samaritan parable to make a point feels like a new low. It’s really the euphemism for “just open the -goddamned- book, just once, ok?”
TradCaths aren't really consistent with the Catholic Church either given their absolutely hatred and animosity towards Vatican 2.
I'm convinced most of the Trad Caths are mostly converts who enjoy the pomp and pageantry, not people who have deep concerns about the theological differences between their previous Protestant denomination and Catholicism.
Yeah, I mean, on some level I'm not on great ground to criticize. I'm Lutheran, we were ignoring the Pope back when it was cool. But it is pretty odd coming from adult converts to Catholicism, who presumably made a conscious choice to respect the spiritual authority of the Pope.
Lots of Catholics all over the world do their best to ignore this pope. He's too progressive for their tastes. They felt much more comfortable with the previous two ones.
Lots of (different) Catholics all over the world did their best to ignore the previous two. Doubtless this stretches right back to Peter.
Bring back Pope Joan.
You're right, look up the history of the church sometime. Even at the shallow end of references, it's f--king amazing it lasted this long.
Even then, George Weigl was openly questioning stuff he didn't like about Pope Benedict, flat out saying Benedict didn't write certain parts of *Caritas in Veritate*
"look, if i can't be a bigot, what's the point in all this LARPing"
My take as a lapsed Catholic:
TradCaths are a perversion of "fundies" as someone who grew up in circles similar to this. They like to inject their individualism and disdain for the poor and women that your average Catholic doesn't hold. They're obsessed with textual literalism and purity like evangelicals also.
Don't forget big silly rituals, ideally done in a language they don't understand so they can go back to doing the opposite of the teachings in their day to day life.
Yeah, they also never want to actually study and understand Latin deeply because "ooh spooky Roman paganism" probably. Same with Greek I've noticed if it's not directly tied to church language they don't bother learning.
don't TradCaths reject the pope's input for anything past like, the 1960s anyway?
