Crucifixion as a means of execution was by no means limited to or even primarily directed at political enemies. Instead, it was employed for individuals of low status - generally non-citizens and particularly the enslaved.

He was crucified between two thieves. (But maybe they were also caught writing "Romani, ite domum!" on walls in Jerusalem)

This was the point. To attempt to degrade Christ through a means of death typically used for criminals. Crucifixion was deliberately chosen to associate Christ with thieves and murderers and, in so doing, cast Him as nothing more than the same. Crucifixion was a vessel meant to delegitimize.

Actually, in the Greek in Matthew and Mark they are called Lestes, which means bandit or brigand, but can also mean revolutionary. And some scholars do indeed think they were probably revolutionary companions of Barabbas, and Jesus took his place and shared in their fate.

The same word Jesus uses to describe the temple as a "den of thieves," unless you think He meant "a den of revolutionary brigands."

He could have yes. Especially if he is speaking of the zealots who would one day turn the temple into exactly that.

It would certainly fit in the vein of the Oliver Discourse, which is all about the fall of Jerusalem in 70A.D.

Luke, on the other hand calls them Kakourgos, which is a more generic word for Criminal.

I mean, obviously, as you clearly know, they were caught writing “Romanes eunt domes” first before they were corrected. Nerd. ;)

Domus. Which autocorrect is now trying to fix to “donuts” this time. How do I teach it that I am a giant freak?

Yeah, wasn't that the point? "See? Your 'god' is nothing more than a common criminal!"

Even the Gospel accounts make clear that the other two people up there with him were common thieves!
