Finally an answer to the question I always casually ask myself every time I use fertilizer - uhh, bat guano? How the fuck are they getting that at an industrial scale? Bat farms?

It was mostly bird guano and it was like a 20-year period of colonizing uninhabitable islands to get that sweet, sweet bird shit, and then they figured out how to manufacture fertilizer. The podcast covers the end of the period a bit, as I recall.
