This is what happens when you have wide spread ignorance of the system. The first 2 thoughts upon seeing this map are: 1. Where’s the population density map that should be next to this one? 2. This is what you get in a winner take all system. Ignore all other votes & people who cast them

The population density mirrors this map to a T.

This map has a key, and which makes it a little bit more understandable. Land does not vote folks.

IL has a statewide population of roughly 12.5 Million people. Of that, over half of the state’s population is in the Chicagoland area. Other counties have such a small population they don’t even warrant a number to go with the color on the map.

The smallest county in Illinois is Hardin, with a population of just 3,563. Followed by Pope: 3,629 Calhoun : 4,245, and Gallatin : 4,364 Some call it gerrymandering. I call it the popular vote. Imagine what this country would be like if they abolished the electoral college.

If they abolished the Electoral College there would be no more Republicans.

More like if you eliminated voter suppression and gerrymandering, there would be no more GOP. They are all in on those tactics to maintain their power as demographics shift away from them. I give TX as an example. Or look what a decade of gerrymandering did to WI.

The Electoral College only applies to Pres. Elections. We still would have the Senate & House GOP. Many reforms are needed. Ranked voting would be a good place to start. But truly, educating voters to understand our system, check sources, logic fallacies & indep thought is what’s really needed

And understanding our system means knowing what’s possible and what’s improbable. Abolishing EC requires a constitutional amendment… an extremely heavy lift. We need to to focus defeating then reform. Resisting. Voting. Shoring up our Democracy, Demanding Accountability, Supporting the vulnerable.

LA Cty is the most populous in the country at 10M. The second most populous is Cook Cty, IL w/ 5M. Look how many *states* have smaller pops than either *county.* We have to fight the distorted narrative. We must push for more use of population maps in reporting. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...

It seems ridiculous than this needs to be said. Common sense should tell a person that rural IL has more agriculture than people and most of IL’s population is in the densely populated greater Chicago area… same with LA.

But it is not about logic & facts. The misinformation has a purpose… to justify anti democratic, minority GOP control. I have lost my faith in humanity. It is willful, self-serving ignorance

I can accept mind when my ideas don’t win in a democracy. Nobody likes to lose. But that is life in a civil society - you fight for your beliefs and accept the majority. I do mind and don’t accept when voices are silenced. That is injustice.

And this population concentration is true of all major cities. The vast swaths of red across states & the nation are invariably low-density pops. I live in L.A. County, the pop of which is greater than that of some 40 states (& of 20-some combined) but we are one tiny blue spot on the national map.

So basically, if you reference the map this one is in response to, anywhere you get more than 10 folks in the same general area, they vote blue ..

More than half of the people who live in IL, live in the greater Chicago area… the area not red on the original map. The rest of the state has LESS than half of the population. IL has 17 Congressional Districts. Majority of the districts are in the Greater Chicago area… where the population is.

Southeast Illinois is particularly sparse. 10 counties combined there couldn’t fill a college football stadium. 1 county has a pop under 3k.

I wish the media, with their breathless election night coverage as well as their day to day analyses of the state of this nation, would feature and reference population maps like this. Dippy Donald waves the red/blue electoral map around--wholly unchecked by reality--& the credulous are deceived.

Yep. But when you have a misinformed population that doesn’t bother with independent thought or understand the system, they fall for maps and deceptive posts. They are happy to be fed bs that justifies their idiocy.
