How much do taxpayers give to the fossil fuel industry? What would happen to society if we eliminated the fossil fuel industry?

Almost as much as the annual budget for the US military. We subsidize them, they earn obscene profits; they destroy the environment, we pay the costs. We're a long way from being able to rely 100% on renewables; weaning Big Oil off the government teat would help move that along.
