I also hate that they're detaining tourists and have spoken out against that, but all you have to do to avoid that is not travel here. Some Americans aren't even able to escape the country legally.
Yes, but not everyone who has to travel to the USA is a tourist. We share one of the longest borders on Earth, and not all of us were born in Canada. Many of us still have loved ones living across the border, or have to be able to cross the border for work, business or health reasons.
As an example: my mother is in her 70’s, her health and mobility are both bad, she cannot easily travel to visit her family in Canada. She lives in Bellingham, a two hour drive away. But anyone who tries to visit her with a gender presentation that doesn’t match their birth certificate? Is at risk.
And of course, this is before we get into the active threats to Canadian sovereignty that have been made by publicly by Trump and are eagerly repeated by his fascist sycophant followers—“51st state” etc. He’s running the playbook that Putin used on Ukraine, and many of us are aware of this fact.
For the most part there are ways around all of those. You can work remotely. Canada has better healthcare overall than we do. Like idk if I was in the UK in the 30s and had loved ones in Germany I would still just not go to Germany. ICE doing this to foreign travelers is well known at this point.
If you had loved ones in Germany in the 1930’s, you honestly think you would have been silent about who Germans should vote for? You wouldn’t have written letters to the papers, shouted at community events? Staying home and watching people die quietly doesn’t work for everyone.
German elections were non-existent at the time. Germans did vote against Hitler and the guy they voted for still gave Hitler power. And I can't *change* the fact that just by existing here I am at risk. And due to my disabilities, most countries I could legally move to would view me as a useless eater and not accept me because I'd be a drain on the healthcare system. Canada is included in this.
So sure there are risks and effects had on Canada here, but no Canadian in Canada at the moment is as at risk as a disabled queer person in America. A lot of trans people here can't even GET passports anymore.
