nothing happened. he's always privately believed this shit, & as the post-1980, reagan --> gingrich order hardened, there became less imperative to conceal his true beliefs in public.

This is true. If you engage with Republicans long enough for them to be honest, you'll realize that *ALL* of them - even the self-professed "moderates" who claim to dislike Trump (but not enough to criticize him out loud) - absolutely *HATE* the idea that "everybody gets to vote".
