It's a moral crime that he wasn't able to become a citizen. Our immigration system is the most irrational fucking thing. If we're willing to let you stay for 35 years then there's absolutely no point not giving you your citizenship except dumb bigotry.

I guess once you've crossed a line like that, kicking them out into states they have no connection to doesn't seem like too much of a reach. Kicking out people who came as children and had no choice in the matter, too. Honestly, it's hard for me to understand.

Which is why it's something that rarely happened until now! It's so intolerable that people assumed that no one would dare, not even Trump

Yeah. It doesn't make sense on a moral level, it doesn't make sense on a practical level (unless your project is inherently racist). I'm skeptical of deporting migrants pretty generally, but there's just no justifying many of these in any terms other than racism or sadism.

Not to be a doomer, but who is going to want to come here even after Trump's term? Not even citizenship is going to deter the next Republican administration from doing God knows what.

according to this-year H1Bs and OP1s that I know, there is still no alternative to the US tech sector. It's a very meaningful headwind, but it seems like it's going to hit universities first, and the corporate economy in a few years

It's not irrational.... there is, in fact, a horrific rationality to it. Throttle immigration numbers, make the process ridiculously long, expensive, and unwieldy, and criminalize people who come anyway? You get a disenfranchised workforce that can't report exploitation, SA, safety violations...

This is why a lot of industries that rely on immigrant labor donate heavily to anti-immigration pols. It's not enough to hire people for cheap... they also want immunity from consequences for bad labor practices. OC an incarcerated workforce is even more exploitable. Expect labor camps in ag areas.

Genuinely just kind of feels like the equivalent of common-law marriage. Like you're a de facto citizen except for the paperwork by that point, especially if you've committed no or only minor crimes while here.

'“My husband yelled. I thought he was being dramatic, and then I saw what was happening — they’re taking Donna. He ran out and tried to talk to the officers,” Gerig said.' "They're taking Donna." Not some other. Not some foreign criminal. The neighbor who was gardening. Donna.

Look how quickly the Krasnov Regime turned on Iranians. All Middle Easterners will get caught up in this net. Sub-Indian Continent (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives): You're next.

1. Much of the developed world has been gripped by similar anti-immigration insanity. 2. We are still a lot, lot, lot richer and more stable than much of the world.

The base only wants this for dumb bigotry reasons, but when my dad picked bell peppers one summer, the bosses promised a huge bonus for red ones near the end of harvest season, then called in an INS (paleo ICE) raid rather than pay. The rich want leverage, up to and including chattel slavery.

My understanding of the history surrounding Bacon’s Rebellion is that a lot of the dumb bigotry in America is structured by, if not downstream of, rich folks’ desire to support the institution of chattel slavery.
