People still have bills to pay, groceries to buy, and large purchases to finance. That's why inflation is a dire threat even to consolidated totalitarian states, and routinely takes down authoritarian regimes that have fully consolidated control over the media.
I think this is completely right, I keep thinking that a major contributor to right wing politics coming so untethered from reality in the US is that the US is SO. RICH. that an unfathomable amount of nonsense can happen *without* impacting so many people's standard of living, but it still matters!
Erdogan is still there and, looks like, consolidating power.
