What's a beginner hobby for someone just getting into being poor?
What's a beginner hobby for someone just getting into being poor?
Clipping coupons - real paper ones from the newspaper. Organize them by store aisle in an envelope and plan your route through the store according to what you have coupons for. (You have to map out your supermarket in advance. Store security may follow you while you do this.)
This activity should be done *in addition to* having a store discount card.
Thank you... this is helpful
Being poor. It's a hobby in and of itself.
Join your local Buy Nothing groups. You may find plants to tend. Or sports equipment. Or art supplies. Or candle making products. Maybe something you see will inspire you!
very cool
Money juggling, coupon clipping, payday loan/title pawn enthusiast, & Etsy contributor.
Bank Robbing.
lol
It used to be counting pennies.
Dumpster diving.
Macaroni necklaces. Use a shoelace so later you can put it back in your shoe and eat the pasta.
Hiking. And turn the phone off. It's very therapeutic.
Get a random cookbook from the library that seems interesting, then see what you can cook from it with what you have at home. Take photos of cool looking recipes for later.
I collect jpegs of expensive nerd collectibles I can't afford.
I collect inspiring pictures that I'll never paint
Bird watching
unironically? visible mending / darning / sewing have to buy less new clothes, and personally i find it very calming and fun
Gardening.
Only if it involves pulling weeds. Otherwise it's too expensive for me. Dirt and water are surprisingly expensive.
And plants. In the last few years, I can't believe how much more they are.
If you have a group of people around, Dungeons and Dragons. All you technically need is a player's handbook and a set of dice for the group to use.
People watching
Crime
🤣
Freezing half portion leftovers and calling it "meal prep".
🤣
Extreme couponing.
Drinking cheap beer & smoking cheap weed...😆
Stealing dandelions to eat from a neighbor's yard
Be careful! They may use weed killer on them! 😱 I'd ask them if it's ok because I know I'd love it if my neighbor wanted to pick my dandelion greens. 🙂 Or my purslane, which apparently is also tasty/edible.
Yes, we have to watch out for poison spraying neighbors. I've eaten my own, as well as other yummy plants outside (I grow different herbs), but I'm glad to see I'm not alone 😀
whittling branches with a kitchen knife
I used to love doing that
right? I got back into carving when I started heating with wood and the autism took over with funky branches. I am carving clubs with which to beat invaders.
Writing. You are literally making something of nothing. Publishing, however, costs money unless you have friends who'll trade you proofreading for sex or something
Rock collecting...
I prefer rock throwing.
🤣
Dog thievery. It's the crime that's most likely to be ignored by the police.
I started playing Chess on the free tier of Chess.com. Not for everyone, but it's free and stretches my left brain.
That sounds like fun
I like it. I was pretty good as a kid but I totally suck at it now.
Naps.
🤣
If you practice enough you can get really good at napping. Nobody gives nap like me. My naptime brings all the boys to the yard.
Crocheting!
Gourmet cooking with ramen.
Love it
All of South Korea can’t be wrong!
Reading. I would go to the library every couple of weeks and grab 2-3 books
Intermittent fasting? On a less snarky note local libraries are great resources for media including audiobooks, some even have started lending tools and other supplies.
lol. Yes, I love using the library. Hopefully that is something the Republicans don't take away.
Watching the sun set. Gazing at the moon and stars ✨
Sleeping. You'll save money on everything you're not doing whilst awake.
*whilst asleep 😅
Disassociate.. Can't feel bad about being poor if you can't feel anything at all.
smart
😳🤣👍😉can’t stop laffin nor text at mo. Ty! 🙏🌻🐢🐉🕊️
Sleight of hand. For performing street magic tricks, (or shoplifting) 😉
🤣
Wow, that is amazing. 👍
Thank you! I love doing them. It keeps me sane. Here's another one I finished recently-
You have an immense talent.
Aww! Thanks! 🤗💙
Serenity delivered faithfully which each careful rendering. This is no exception, S. Love the circular design.
Thank you! I was inspired by a talented embroidery artist on twitter, Gemma Matthews.
I've seen her stuff. Gorgeous!
I have fear for the future of both of your sets of hands. These are meticulous, colorful and stunning as are yours. Different gifts.
That's gorgeous! And very difficult to do with pixels. Love it.
Thank you! It keeps me sane in all the chaos.
Stay sane please…. like this beauty soul please! Ty! 🙏🌻🐢🐉🕊️
...I legit thought it was embroidery at first glance. It's impressive and gorgeous in any case.
Combat food shopping. Especially in the 'slightly used' & 'not quite expired' sections of the store. Look to invest in a working standalone freezer, not too big.
Whittling, if you have a knife. Otherwise rubbing two sticks together.
Counting money 💰
😂
Diggin' holes, sharpening sticks on a sidewalk... Childhood nostalgia, y'know? I hear walking is good for people. It's a bit of an investment, but coloring books have been very soothing.
You can get colouring books and wooden coloured pencils at the dollar store, not high quality but it is acceptable. I have a few.
That's all fun stuff.
I love making the cheap pencils blend like they're Prismacolors. A white colored pencil does wonders!
Sometimes if you're lucky, at thrift shops you can find boxes of old Prismacolors and other good stuff.
If I find Prismacolors at a thrift store, I'm shattering windows with my ecstatic screaming. (And now I will keep an eye out for 'em. Usually I'm looking for stoneware plates or good bowl mugs...)
I wish you lived nearby, I have an extra box that I would gladly give you (did I mention I'm an artist)
That's very sweet, and I'd counter with giving you colored doodles. (No, but I got the inkling when you vibed with Prismacolors! You probably put those pencils to better use than I do, honestly. I'm literally coloring garbage right now.)
Why thank you. It's fun to color and then to blend the colors together. I was the weirdest kid ever.
Weird kids are good people.
So true
Communion- three times a day with a nice walk between “meals”.
Church potlucks.
Running.
Hand embrodery, lots of yhrift shops have HUGE bags of embrodery floss for a couple of bucks. You can also use recycled fabrics. Also, can you get into clothing mending.
very cool
Vintage hankies that you embroider things Pam Bondi says. Look at Tinypricks Project. I chose a loser of the day.
🤣
Gardening 🥰
Gardening & houseplants You can do it on a tight budget or go large
I was going to say this. Plant a seed and yell ‘grow, fucker’ at it every night.
🤣Now that's a hobby
Gardening! Grow some food.🥔🌽🥕🍅🍓 Pulling weeds and hacking them with a hoe is therapeutic if you imagine...you know. Pumpkin chucking can be particularly helpful. So in a nutshell, you get to ki🏒🏒 /destroy something and feed yourself. 😉
Oh! I know. Wallowing in self loathing. It’s what I do.
That seems inexpensive AND I already do that. Thanks!
Greeter at Walmart
Drawing ✍️
knitting
Un-knitting thrift store sweaters and using the yarn to make something else can be quite affordable. 😉
Walking, taking neat pics with ur phone, staring at a wall
If u have a PC you should download some emulators and replay some of ur childhood games :3 or even if you have a nice phone, you can play any handheld emulators or maybe even some bigger ones. I can play gamecube games on my phone!! (S25 Ultra). Just connect a PS4 controller via Bluetooth! :))
That's a great idea. I used to love video games.
It's so cool being able to pull my phone out and load up Pokemon Emerald or Super Mario Advance 2, or even Luigi's Mansion (my phone gets hot after a while, so I usually just play that one on my PC lol)
I bet. I think I could probably still beat all of the Super Mario bros - Somewhere I have a Game Boy Advance lol - I used to love that thing
I still have mine too, and I even have the cartridge for SMBA2 but it's still very annoying that it doesn't have a backlight, so I still usually just use my phone lol
My sister and I had one to share when we were kids but we either broke it or lost it lol. Now I can use my phone so I'm just too lazy to find a new one. It's still really cool having the GBA :)
<3
Gardening is a great one. Then sell it at your local Farmer Market. Is one.Making bird houses,as well would sell 🙏🏼🤗🕊️❤️❤️❤️❤️🌬️🌊🌬️🌊💙💙
The culinary staple of Ice Soup

Searching couch cushions for spare change. It's amazing what kinds of treasures you can find in there!
Collecting aluminum cans and other discarded aluminum items.
Have you considered collecting sand?
lol
I’m serious though 😫 I actually do that. Everybody’s sand’s a little different. I’ve been promised it will be mentioned in my obit 😂😬
Oh, sorry I laughed then. I thought it was because that would be all that I could afford.
But lower your expectations, I guess Your collection of sand might not include Nice, Bali, St.Tropez, Tahiti, Oahu, Acapulco, Bermuda, etc
There’re 3 frm Hawaii, but not Oahu. White Sands New Mexico, Colorado sand dune. And then I’ve been gifted some sand & a desert rose from Saudi & Pensacola. I know there’re others, but I can’t remember & they’re packed away until I find a cabinet to put them in. Correct, though, none on your list. 🤔
I don’t want to be that guy, but I was pointing out that collecting sand isn’t cheap If you want an interesting collection that is Travel is involved Or you have to have jet setting friends who love your quirk and don’t mind hassle at the airport My dad collects sand I’m inheriting mine lol
Also, you’re not “that guy” bc you’re not an a$$hole…
Thanks for not taking me the wrong way Your collection sounds super cool
Thank you!! Looking forward to growing it in future. Covid and hurricanes kinda stopped my travels.
😂 I’ve never met anyone else who does it!!! Yes, I am gifted sand from time to time. It’s how I got my Saudi sand. My parents lived there for a few years and brought it to me. Co workers used to also 😂 That’s a fair assessment 😬
A long time ago I did see a picture of a 1%er a$$hole’s collection in an architecture magazine Very cool when all the uniform spice jars were lined up on shelves I thought if I had unlimited funds, I could happily collect sand, Agnes Martins, and Robert Rymans I haven’t a clue how my dad got 💡
lol. I mean, that too 😂🤷♀️ No worries, it’s not exactly a common collection 🤪 I actually had my sand tested for cocaine at the airport once. I told’em if it failed they could take it for bogarting 😬
🤣I can't even imagine how scary that was
I wasn’t too worried. I packed my own sand. If it had failed, you better believe I was going back to that beach.😜🙃😉 I’ll rat out the entire shoreline if I have to 😋
😂
😂umm learning diff ways of how to cook beans dear heart. Umm 🤔 I’ll think on it but hey, you have your health and a beauty soul soo you are so good it’s silly! Yay you! 🫂🌻🐢🐉🕊️😊
Yay. Lol. Thank you. I think most people are going thru tough times right now.
True soo true….here too butt lol I’ve now given-up Dairy-trying & Meats thanks to donnie’s fkin idiocy.Sorry! Cuss alert! The meats I’ve given up in past butt this No Dairy thang just sucks! As there aren’t Any Regulations to Protect humans & animals in States…well hell, I guess I’m waiting 3+ yrs!👍
As someone with chronic illness, I had to cut out most things I like...but dairy was the hardest. I have put cheese and ice cream back in my diet because it's too fuckin' sad not to eat it. But it's expensive so only a tiny bit. I tried being a vegetarian and my nails and hair started falling out
HfR look at Nutrition in Foods🙏🤔I’ve studied Foods & Nutrition since I was 9 yrs old 👍😅 & that was 300 yrs be4 the internet!🤣 There used to be these very cool things called books.😉 I would stumble around Libraries & Book Stores-like I was stoned on learn- reading😅🤣 Food constantly surprises me! 🥰🫂🌻

Ugh hm ok……Chronic illness sucks!Sorry darlin! drs just literally keep killing me. I’m on my 10th life.No shit! Beans contain a whole lotta protein and fiber and I’ve been allowing the Beans universe 2dl recipe ideas to me lately. I’ve created a few incredible recipes! There’s 🥥 ,Almond & Oat milks2
I used to make amazing bean burgers when I was vegetarian. I'm sorry about the doctors... believe me I've been thru it with do tors... sorry you have too
I’m so sorry you’ve suffered tors tortures too! The worstest parts are how clueless the majority of American drs are! I actually went down to Mexico with no plans or any inklings of drs there! After killing me for 6th time-drs here said, *Learn to live with it!* um Hell No!cuss We Fixed It in 1 Yr!👍
Wow, that's incredible. How'd they fix it?!
IntraVeinous (IV) Feed of Electrolytes, Minerals & Vitamins which actually brought Feeling back into an inch around my right knee. I was so stunned I near passed out!😳 I flew back to States & I worked w/ a Lab & I got dr who’d killed me to get my Insurance to pay for weekly IV’s. 98% Recovery-True👍
That's amazing! I'm so glad it worked. Glad you got payment for the IVs too.
Ooh darlin ouch… I just keep wondering when American drs are gonna get to the *Do No Harm* on us- part! Holy freakin! Bean burgers… yum. For absolutely no reason at all u made me think of these Kale & Corn *pancakes* I used to make. I used grated carrots & onions & now I’m drooling here lol. Sorry😅
Sounds so good. I wonder if the vegetarianism was causing my nails to fall out or the autoimmune disorder that I found out I had a short time later. Never thought about it.
I don’t know what caused what beauty soul but yea…. The one thing I do Know is that Nutrition plays a Vital Role in Our Health! I believe Food is a primary component for our bodies to maintain complete health! To me-silly ninny that I can be-I think it’s a major factor in our Mental Health too!🤗 🙏🌻🕊️
I'd reply better but I'm feeling very ill right now, ironically
They were sooo freakin deelish holy moly I’m gonna have to go for a shop now & make some!😉Yumming out here. Sorry. I started my vegetarian journey at around 7 and tried successfully to maintain it in freakin Boarding Schools. Umm true lol. 😝 it was ridiculous as I think I turned into a rabbit!😅 🤷♀️ 🌻🙏
That sounds nearly impossible. Good for you. I'm proud of you, that was probably really hard.
Bird watching. You can find bird info on the internet for free.
Bird and nature watching are pretty cool, and can transition with you when you’re back to having money.
If you collect enough ketchup packets from the fast food joints, after a while, if you have enough, put them in a pan add some water… tomato soup.
Oooh cooking!
Collecting and arranging used snail homes.
Clothing mending and repair.
Keeping your car running.
As a poor adept, I like making things (usually yard art) from items that people throw away (usually off the banks of rural roads).
That sounds like so much fun
Thank you. You will occasionally see photos of my place where I exhibit stuff tossed out that's been incorporated into helping beautify my yard.
I'm an artist, so this interests me. I will definitely watch for them.
Show up at Dunkin Donuts two minutes before closing and they give you a “buy one, get nine stale ones free…. Now get the fuck out we’re closing” special
I love that. We live right by Dunkin and they must not be doing well. They used to have donuts all the way up until nighttime. And now you ask for a donut at 11AM and they're like "Donuts? We don't do that here"
Getting a library card.. for wifi
Coinstar speed runs
Cat hoarding
🤣 a great hobby until they get very expensive, adding to a new level of poor 💜 but rich in cuddles and fur
Collect sores
All of these are super ideas accept for the sores. I'll leave that to you.
Library time. AC, entertainment, resources.
Reading books from the library, thrifting craft supplies and making things (bonus points if you sell it), playing an instrument you already own, going for walks and hikes, foraging, cooking things you found after confirming with iNat or library books that you won't die, and card games.
Bank robbery cosplay
🤣
Eating the rich, of course.
😂
It's all about the sauces.
😂
The Five French Mothers have entered the chat. *five nods*
🤣Thanks French Mothers
Collecting pop/beer cans and wine bottles off the street and returning them for the deposit. Bonus points: hobby has social value (removing litter and preventing potential broken glass hazards), built in exercise component, can be done in groups and is net positive monetarily. Truly win win.
I did that pre-pandemic and two full trash bags of cans collected over a couple weeks only got me about $2.50. Didn’t seem worth it to have that much trash sitting at home. But getting exercise outside and picking up litter isn’t a bad thing.
We do it every once in awhile with our children at the cottage...cleaning up the public trail is good for the soul, gets us out and about and allows for great conversation.
And you get bonus exercise points when there's a line at the recycling center! ❌Standing desk ✅Standing Environmental Warrior™
Excellent point! If you, perchance, run on the spot in the line you could really ramp up those bonus exercise points.
If RFK Jr. has is way, all Americans will be required to wear such devices to ensure that they are "healthy".
Truth!
Searching all purses and coat pockets for $. I once found a 20 in my winter coat in a summer of desperation. I felt something akin to euphoria.
Nice.
For me, back to my music and singing - and taking pics of nature (don't worry about "stuff")
you are a great musician, I'm glad you have music in your life still
thank you :)
