it’s also not going to hurt said person if I tell them not to waste their time on something I don’t want and never asked for. they can still choose to pray. I’m not obligated to appease them.

Prayer is not benign.

This isn’t about “thoughts and prayers,” though. This is about one person saying they’ll pray for you if you’re having a hard time. That is not harmful. It’s just a way of showing support to someone you know, especially if they don’t have the resources to help otherwise.

This is a false rationalization. You should never assume that people want your prayers. It is completely arrogant to push this on others. It is harmful when it's not welcome. You are acknowledging that prayer is not helpful. It is not support, it is empty words.

Why don't you let it go If people tell you they don't want this why are you insisting on doing it? If you think religion causes no harm you clearly have never studied history.
