They aren't gutting the CDC to please the voting base, though it will to some sliver of it. They are gutting the CDC because a large number of Republican elites would like tens of millions of Americans to just die. They are extremist ideologues.

It's the Club of Rome's Limits to Growth. It says that population growth is a strain on available resources. So you need to reduce use of stuff like oil, grow more food, and reduce the population (like with birth control). But if you are evil, and you kill the people, then you get to keep the oil.

We're going to need state and municipal health agencies to step into the gap. And we're going to need other nations to put vaccination requirements on visitors from the United States.
