In fairness, the "be a guy who knows a guy" work culture created and sustained numerous entire industries where women, minorities and disabled workers were completely shut out, regardless of their relevant experience or merit. Maybe "be a guy who knows a person" is a better way to put it.

As a woman who spent years in all male work environments, I often do! We all like working with our buddies. The path to a more inclusive society requires being mindful of whether we've only got one kind of buddy and doing some psychological repairs on ourselves if that turns out to be the case.
