I’m confused. To whom does anyone owe gratitude. And when did gratitude become a thing other than in the head of a man so owned that “gratitude” is his life’s mission so he can retain power.

It's been suggested elsewhere that JD's obsession with gratitude is due to his abusive childhood - you have to be grateful even when you're being treated like crap. Naturally as an adult he has applied that to politics. (Meanwhile, enjoy a semi-related Danny Elfman song.)
