Why are all major media outlets reporting this with the WH framing of it being benign and common? It may be common in older and overweight people but it’s not too great and you don’t want it. NIH literally says it’s not a benign disorder.

Yeah ~5% of American adults have it, but by definition it's not benign. (Minor would have been fine but had to lie). Good thing he obviously has the focus and temperament to lose weight (which is going to have to be hard since his official weight is so low *eyeroll*) and start an exercise regimen.

An uncle about his age was diagnosed recently. Other than cinnarizine for a couple of months and the compression socks,, his scans were ok enough to not warrant ant surgery. He'll laugh when I tell him.

He’s an overweight couch potato - the venous insufficiency is in his case a symptom. And the bruised hand is highly unlikely to be a direct correlate with venous insufficiency. My guess is the proximal cause of both issues is congestive heart failure. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...

Neither a Dr or nurse, but anytime a circulatory issue has come up in my experience, they always do a CT scan with contrast to determine whether there are any blockages causing the situation. They usually route of giving the contrast dye (for me at least) has been an IV on my hand

Uhhh, I am an otherwise healthy adult and was diagnosed with this condition. I am tall and worked at a standing desk all day, which contributed to one of my veins failing. I'm not saying the media should downplay this, but let's not paint with a broad brush.

I have it in a leg I tore apart playing basketball decades ago. They told me to wear a 20-30 compression sock and keep an eye on it. I’m 66 and still playing softball. I suspect it’s more dangerous when it’s both legs and not due to injury. Shrug.

I hate how this disinformation could hurt other people with this diagnosis. It needs careful treatment and management. It can be painful and have various complications. We don't want to end up with a load of older folks saying "they said it was benign" and not seeking appropriate care.
