I have a half-formed idea that the ur-problem of our times is a failure of imagination by liberal elites. Can’t imagine bad outcomes, or how bad things can get, so there’s never any urgency. Can’t imagine new solutions, so it’s just constant muddling through, hoping things get back to “normal.”

That and a lack of imagination in using the levers of power they do have. Pelosi and Schumer could have uncapped the House in 2022 ahead of midterms.

They can imagine bad outcomes well enough to fundraise off em - over and over. But they don't take meaningful steps to stop bad outcomes or penalize Rs for supporting them. That would require risking the perks of their position. And that's what they can't imagine doing. Which is why they fail.

Democratic leadership believe in democracy, yet I think they're only capable of understanding it as a set of rules. Clinging to norms as if doing otherwise is unthinkable, no matter what happens around them. They're ossified.
