Yes, and the absence of a clutch made the system pretty reliable. But it was heavy.

Oh they absolutely have. Balancing locomotive power and the weight of the train, including locomotives and fuel, is a not inconsiderable part of planning freight trains. I got REALLY good at it after a while, because fixing it when you got the math wrong at the start could take hours.
