I don't suppose it ultimately makes much difference, but I'm always curious which of these people are lying and which are just surprisingly ignorant.

I used to wonder that myself, but I've pretty much decided that it's reasonable to assume that for most of them it's both. Probably how much is one and how much is the other varies by individual, but I don't GAF anymore.
