Just as J6 was motivated by MAGA lies and fake media reports, Trump’s threatened assault on Portland seems to be based on footage from 2020 he saw on Fox recently. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

There is some footage from 2020. I would say the preponderance of the footage in that FOX segment was from this summer tho.

This is a link to the FB post by that J6er. In 15 hours it got 715 shares and has elicited 1200 comments, almost all of which are “freedom loving” Oregonians cheering on a military invasion of their state. www.facebook.com/share/r/19qq...

Historian Joseph Fronczak has described fascism as a form of "participatory anti-democracy." That FB post is a perfect example of that dynamic. It's not just that ordinary "conservative" Oregonians are tolerating a military crackdown on their state, they are positively thrilled by it.

I've had many an Oregonian tell me that one of the defining features of the state's political culture is a gut-level "libertarianism." There's some truth to that...but it misses the extent to which those white, reactionary, insular libertarians are willing to accept state violence to "protect" them.

Seth Cotlar @sethcotlar.bsky.social

And this is where two key features of MAGA political culture become especially salient--nostalgia and conspiracism. Conservative Oregonians love to hate Portland and how supposedly "chaotic and violent" it is. You know how conservative Oregonians viewed PDX in the 80s--as "chaotic and violent."

Have these people traveled or lived literally anywhere else? I grew up in Mexico City in the 80s, lived in Chicago for a few decades, and now live in Portland. It’s as close to perfect as you can get in an American city. Violence is negligible. This place is quaint and quiet by comparison.

There were literally gangs of neo-Nazi skinheads roaming the streets of Portland harassing people in the late 80s. It was not uncommon to be accosted by these assholes when going to a concert or just waiting for a bus. They murdered an Ethiopian immigrant in inner SE PDX in 1988.

I used to be confused by Oregon's wierd libertarianism where gun-toting hippy communes could loosely coexist with the "4th generation" racist settler families. Times were simpler with the Rajneeshis poisoning the food & water. Now it's NAZI's sabotaging the electrical grid & Texas BBQ everywhere.

What's going on here is not hypocrisy (we're ok with protest when we do it but not when they do it), it's (Carl) Schmittian illiberalism in which they do not see their opponents as fellow citizens to be argued with, but rather illegitimate/degenerate/Satanic enemies to be eliminated.
