I am in Germany right now. An not all laughed. Some back then definitely turned a blind eye. An some now do not want to talk about such horrors. But the one thing that the majority of Germans share is that they do not want to forget what happened so as not to repeat it.
There certainly is a sense of shame there about it. The US doesn't seem to have that same emotional response to all of the deplorable things done here. In fact, far too many here want things that way again.

I couldn't agree more when it comes to the US. Many would like for nothing more than things to be that way. Not only is there no emotional response there is no empathy. When you turn a blind eye to atrocities happening right before you, you fail to see. It's the so long as it doesn't affect me.
