I'm saying that having some small number of people take questions like "can we be sure we aren't creating and torturing conscious beings" seriously is a reasonable hedge.

I’d prefer we take that question seriously in regards to actual living creatures before we accede to techbro hype about elaborate Monte Carlo simulations getting their feeling hurt.
