This is one of the most well respected umpiring crews in the game. Alan Porter is probably the best umpire in baseball. Jim Wolf is universally respected. Both calls were coin flips. It is unhinged for Murph to lose it like this & antagonize them; the Brewers will see them again in October.
Hopefully they'll do a better job in October.
If you can’t tolerate this crew, you can’t tolerate umpires generally. That’s fine, I guess, but they are part of the game.
One of the goals of a manager is to get more favorable calls for his team. It's been statistically proven that whining works.
So is riling them up to get better calls later in the year. Zone has been bad for most of the game. And if all the coin flips go against you, you have a right to be mad.
If you think that tirade is going to make Alan Porter and Jim Wolf more likely to call games in the Brewers favor in the future, so be it. I disagree. These are not anxious rookies; they call postseason games every year. All Murph accomplished was to antagonize them.
It's a proven strategy. Maybe it won't work this time, but odds they'll be matched up in games that means something are low anyway.
Murph is fighting for his team. His players love it. We don't need to worry about hurting the umps feelings.
