It wasn’t a beat at all until probably 2017/2018, & even then there weren’t really many of us on it. But at some point many stories increasingly became both politics & extremism. And it’s confusing now because I’m not sourced like a typical political reporter
Extremism ought to be something every reporter, no matter their beat, watches for. We have an extremism problem in every aspect of our society. Obviously there’s political extremism, but also sports extremism, arts extremism, business extremism.
But I agree with your assessment that rhetoric that would be veiled is now just...people saying it out loud. I don't even know what to say about it other than, yes, people really want the return of Jim Crow racism.
