The Founders were very aware some who were not honorable could be elected. Particularly for President. That’s why they divided power. Jefferson was worried about factionalism, and sure enough, political parties rose quickly. What the Founders did not seem to anticipate, however…

…was that the Legislative and Judicial branches would so willingly cede authority to the Executive branch. The development of a regulatory state they perhaps could have foreseen, but not the near-slavish devotion legislators might show a president, and the power the Supreme Court would grant.

Weak men in positions of great power. Lousy combination.

It's not that they didn't anticipate it. They wrote about in the Federalist Papers as one of the fears. It's that there was nothing more they could do to stop it from happening. They wrote the checks and balances, separated the three branches and trusted the system to hold.

I think the founders were okay with dishonorable people. Honor was in short supply even way back then.

Treason and being a traitor were punished by harsh penalties including hanging and being doused in tar with a topping of feathers. Strong deterrents. Also village idiots were mocked and kept on the porch not put in top level department or cabinet positions.

Stupidity and ignorance have reached a critical level where representative democracy breaks down. We literally cannot effectively represent ourselves anymore. The Achilles heel of democratic governance has been, is, and always will be stupidity. There’s always an event horizon of stupid.

The real mistake was believing that only ambitious people would be elected. They didn't account for the possibility that a world of plenty would make it possible that folks' ambition would peak out at "number one lackey to the mad emperor".

I think they new what could go wrong. I think they hoped this wouldn’t happen. Like Franklin said, “A Republic if you can keep it.” Holy hell this is a mess right now!!!

We can still head off the worst case scenario, but it’s not going to be easy, or bloodless. We are at peak propaganda, and have a massive number of guns in the hands of some deeply unstable people. Right now, we need as much sand in the gears as possible. And we need courage.

I think there was always some concern about what Hamilton called "the rabble". For many, that concern reached a peak when the rabble elected Andrew Jackson.

If all states would assign their electors to the winner of the popular vote in Presidential elections, it would at least render the Electoral College useless, without requiring a change in the Constitution. Unfortunately, an ignorant populace could still elect a lying rapist felon as POTUS.

This disqualification can be removed by a two-thirds vote of each house of Congress. We failed our founding fathers when some clerk in an office - when presented with trump’s paperwork to become a candidate in the 2024 election - didn’t summarily stamp it “REJECTED.” And let Trump go to Court.

It’s like the UK, which doesn’t have a real constitution (a written down one) in the belief that everyone will be a good chap.

They tried for Free and Fair elections. When that process gets stolen by bad governance. Elections influenced by money and fake news we end up in the present day nightmare. No taxation without representation. They forget basic math 1% VS 99%.

We have to come to the realization that last year's elections were rigged. The majority of Americans knew exactly what would happen if Trump and other Rethuglicans found their way into office again. Fool us once, shame on us. Fool us twice... yeah that didn't happen.
