Why are shop-bought tomatoes so very tasteless this year?
Why are shop-bought tomatoes so very tasteless this year?
Because the thrill of stealing them adds flavour. 🙃
And is the current government to blame… 🤔
The big ones I used to use for cooking are just tasteless balls this year. Been using smaller tomatoes, of all varieties, this year instead. Cherry ones for salads and light sauces. Plum for deeper sauces and reducing to salsa, etc.
Yes, the smaller ones are less bad this year, but even in France and Italy, the quality is noticeably poor overall. And with this level of sunshine, I find it hard to know why.
While on the subject, last week, I used a very reduced and almost burnt bitter plum tomato paste as the heart of this lunchtime snack idea from @nigella.bsky.social . Now, that was outstanding... bsky.app/profile/nige...
Gonna try this one!
the baseline supermarket tomato is bad as they're selected for size, shape and shelf stability rather than flavour. Then if they're imported the longer the journey, the more they're refrigerated and that degrades flavour. With disruptions in recent years stores have been looking wider for supply
uk tomatoes have been fine though - especially smaller ones. And Isle of Wight tomatoes are always good - M&S sell them
Thanks John, will try them
