Has the US borrowed huge $$ from China and buy Chinese manufactured goods? China probably needs the US to be fairly robust.

The positive thing about that is that the USA will be sold at Chinese price with discount. Which brings the value of USA to about the one of Yemen or Sudan. Call it a deal.

I see where you're coming from on this. I understand. Of course, climate change is critically important, and I don't think the author was disputing that. There must be a clearly defined hierarchy of priorities when discussing world events when discussing solutions.

I don't believe it was negating the impact of carbon emission by the U.S. Out of the top 10 biggest carbon emitting countries, the U.S. (which is ranked #2) emits 6 bn tons of CO2 compared the 29 bn tons by the other nine, collectively.

Jack Hopkins-The Original @therealjackhopkins.bsky.social

China's threat to the U.S. (and the rest of the world) is more immediate than that posed by climate change. That's how I interpreted that article: An author using comparisons to emphasize the need for a greater sense of urgency in addressing the threat of China compared to other critical issues.

avatar
Jack Hopkins-The Original @therealjackhopkins.bsky.social

In that case, I agree with the article. Given that China could defeat the United States militarily and crush us economically inside of one year if they fully committed themselves to that goal, China is a more immediate issue in the short term.

I disagree with this assessment. Ever buy cheap Chinese knock-off stuff from DH Gate? That's the quality of their military equipment. The volume of bodies they have is massive. But there's no way they would beat us in under a year. I don't even think they'd beat us.

I saw it as "Trump is President for the next four years; there's nothing we can do about it. Let's look at the most immediate threats to the United States (and the world) in that time frame and see what surviving Trump (or not) looks like."

I think hoping that the TOP 0.1% of the population is going to do the interest of the 99.9% of the population is a fallacy. People need to organise, join local communities, stop using credit cards, buy local and create local support networks.

dec 15, 2024, 1:31 pm • 0 0 • view
avatar
Jack Hopkins-The Original @therealjackhopkins.bsky.social

People are not going to stop using credit cards. Any time you discuss solutions, and one of them requires ceasing a behavior ingrained in society for the last four decades...it's best to drop that change from your list. Unfortunately, the same applies to buying local.

metanoiacommunity.bsky.social @metanoiacommunity.bsky.social

Depends, if we can explain the consequences and educate people change is possible. People used asbestos extensively until it was understood how dangerous it was. By buying local we empower our local communities and make them more resilient, while slowly degrading the grip of big corporations.

I read this and it certainly sounds like TFG can put china in a strong position against our interests if he frees up the trade restrictions president Biden implemented. Can hurt our technology manufacturing strides. And it sounds like he holds the “off” button which makes it even scarier!
