Facts: A woman’s right to choose has always mattered deeply to me. But let’s talk about how both parties have used it—for very different reasons. Everyone knew Republicans would try to stack the Supreme Court and overturn Roe v. Wade. They said it out loud for years. And they did exactly that. 1/4

Jack, you are 💯 accurate! Cynical behavior by Democrats to get people to vote on a hot button issue. It's a lot easier to focus on abortion rights than actually developing a platform for long term growth. People have the focus of gnats and need to be re-trained.

I can never work out: why do Democrats need so much money to win an election? Tell the truth. Promote ACTUAL progressive policies - billionaires can get fucked. Win elections. People receive benefits from ACTUAL progressive policies. People praise Democrats. Win elections. Repeat.

The failure lies in the very mistaken belief that the GOP would never really “go there” with Roe. It was a much greater motivator for the right.

Men would revolt if we began to legislate their healthcare. “No viagra for you!” “Vasectomies for all! If a woman decides to get pregnant, the man needs her permission for a vasectomy reversal.”

But Democrats? They watched it happen. They sounded alarms, they fundraised, they told us to “Vote blue or lose Roe.” But they never acted when they could. In 2009-2010, Democrats had a filibuster-proof 60-40 Senate majority. They had the White House and the House. 2/4

How many of those Democrats supported a woman's right to choose? I promise you that it was not 100%. This argument holds water only if 100% of Dems would have voted pro-choice, which is untrue. Republicans are 99% anti-choice. 1 anti-choice Dem and it's filibusterable.

Jen Larkin @petticoatdespot.bsky.social

Should they have done more? Sure. That's a reasonable stance. Does not having succeeded when it was mathematically slightly impossible prove that they were just using that as a wedge issue? No. Is it possible that some Dems used it as a wedge issue? That's probable! But it's a leap to say all did.

They could’ve codified abortion rights into law. They chose not to. Why? Because the threat of losing abortion rights was more valuable politically than actually securing them. Fear got voters out. Fear brought in donations. “Protect Roe” became a permanent campaign slogan. 3/4

Not sure if the why was triggered only by that. They certainly also feared the political fallout of being labeled „pro abortion“. In any case, these tactical reasons hit their credibility hard.

There was also a concerted effort along those same years of the GOP installing people at the state level that would, once Roewas taken down, make sure it came down on the state level too, irregardless if the will of the people wanted it or not. Suppose the Democrats had pushed a “codify Roe” bill to a vote, which would not have passed due to a few anti-choice Democrats in the House and a Republican filibuster in the Senate. The result would have been to lose some Democratic held seats in red or purple states. How would that help the cause?

I've been barking about it since the 1980s once I learned what abortion was, to the point of being annoying. Abortion and birth control are essential medical care. Men didn't think this would happen though, nor did most women. What will men do when the birth control gets taken away too?

64,000 women were forced to carry unwanted pregnancies due to rape just in 2023 in red states. Women's consent no longer matters to the men (over 60%) who voted for the rapist. www.scientificamerican.com/article/64-0...
