Either! Probably the first was what I originally thought, but maybe there's some cool swords with cool origin stories anyway - which makes them kind of the same thing?

It's not the most visually elaborate sword but the other day I was fascinated by the story of radical abolitionist John Brown who was fighting slavery with a broadsword:
