Was this part of a frog and toad survey program, and if so, what state? Or, was this just like a naturalism self-education thing?

Amazing! When I visit my parents in like a month, I will see if I can find the Michigan cassette tape there. I wonder about the dates... It seems like a 1997 project of the Minnesota state government, which iirc is just after Michigan's started.

Just found this information -- Michigan survey was recently put on hold. The original idea was that people could be trained to identify fitting sites, and even 5-10 years of data there could be helpful. www.interlochenpublicradio.org/2023-05-05/t...

The study in Minnesota ran 1996—2002, after a pilot program in 1993. I think study was nationwide. From the study intro: The Minnesota Frog and Toad Calling Survey (MFTCS) was developed in response to concern over the potential for population declines in Minnesota’s fourteen frog and toad species.

In 1993, a pilot project established 20 frog and toad survey routes under the coordination of herpetologist John Moriarty, and with funding from the Minnesota Herpetological Society and the Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles.
