No. Nottingham is the city. Notts is the county of Nottinghamshire. You don’t say Lincs City or Northants Town. And Notts Forest is equally wrong.

Ironically, Notts County play in Nottingham, whilst Nottingham Forest play in West Bridgford in the county of Notts.

no one cares about your local idioms. which are obviously based on some sort of medieval superstition. its nottingham forest, or, notts forest. that's what the rest of the entire world uses and has used forever. its 2025. get with the programme.

We were originally Nottingham FC, and a founding member of the Football League under that name, until about 1892, when Nottingham Forest joined the league with their admission supported by “Notts. County”. Note the punctuation. “Notts.” is clearly an abbreviation of “Nottinghamshire”.

Notts Forest is used the world over regardless of recent local use. Also Notts Forest’s ground is in Notts rather than Nottingham itself isn’t it?

It’s a bit like saying Bayern Munich (it should be either Bayern Munchen or Bavaria Munich) or HSV Hamburg. It might be common usage, but it’s wrong and intensely irritating.

I believe the club and fans used it in their earlier years so it’s probably caused by that as much as anything

Perhaps; but I’ve been watching County for over 40 years and it’s always been clear that fans of both clubs and the clubs themselves agree on this. Calling Forest “Notts” comes over as either ignorant or deliberately insulting. It’s a rookie error when either a commentator or a pundit gets it wrong.

It’s no good telling people who won’t listen, Graham. Have they brought the Miners’ Strike up yet?

It is the only issue which unites Notts and Forest fans. Only one Notts.

It’s been used by non-Notts Forest fans with no intention of insult for generations. It’s more commonly used outside of Nottingham whether it’s based upon ignorance or not.

The land Nottingham Forest play on is actually owned by the City, hence the name City Ground. I see Bramley Moore FC have had a good start to their new season. (evolving language old chap dont ya know) I think pronouns can be quite contentious

Town Ground in the Meadows was renamed City Ground in 1897 when the city status was granted. The City gave the club a lease for the new ground in the same year on land that the Town had owned since 1551, (and rented out to cover the maintenance of Trent Bridge), and the name moved to the new ground.

Both clubs shared both grounds until County moved across the river to Meadow Lane in 1910.

Wasn't really a share County played at Trent Bridge and only played at the City ground early and late season as the cricket took priority. They got kicked off TB in 1908 and hence moved to the meadows in 1910. Somewhat ironic as we got kicked out of TB to accommodate County moving in.
