The fear of the foreigner is the oldest political trick in the world. And it’s driven in part by our natural instincts (as any other animal) to be alert when something is not as per usual. And the only way to deal with it is to know what these new “threats” are.

Using social media to develop opposing group norms, then putting them against one another, is both as old as time and also a new way to sow dissent from a distance.

I’ve listened to a podcast with a leading anthropologist and the only solution he could find to reduce this madness of hate driven by social media is via more dialogue. So we need to do a lot more to reach out to others.
