The fawn walked a little bit, clearly just learning how to do so, very gingerly, then nibbled on a leaf, and laid down next to our mulch pile

It could, if it wants to. The fence between them is very low, and dear hop over it all the time. But what I’ve read is that mama deer keep their distance from the newborns initially. That way they don’t attract predators to the babies.

Though the urge to help can be strong they recommend not to interfere with a fawn in such situations. I can see how that could happen.

They may look cute, but to farmers, they're just overgrown rats. And they are YUGE driving hazards around these parts.

Just make sure you don’t have a dog out in the vicinity. It freaks the mom out and they’ll confront you.
