PBS makes excellent documentaries. There are great podcasts too. Some are intimidated by books.

Animal Farm is an allegory that is most specifically a critique of communism. The books I'd recommend is 'On Tyranny' by Tom Snyder, 'Ur Fascism' by Umberto Eco, 'Anatomy of Fascism' by Paxton or 'Why Nations Fail' by Acemoglu/Robinson.
I read 1984 under its first term. It was scary then. It’s prophetic now.
I read it in 1984, and my 8th grade social studies class did a deep dive into what it meant. I was 13 and could never imagine it being real.
