WTF
I am currently waiting for a new well, cost $11,000 USD, Thankfully clean water is only 90 feet down and I got 75% paid for by local charity foundation that helps poverty level folks like me on fixed retirement incomes. Of course in my rural situation power can fail, no water. Getting a gennie next😉
White Men take water for granted, this is from 2016 and things are probably even worse today by an order of magnitude - www.unicef.org/press-releas...
They are literally pricing people out of their communities for WATER 💧 #bcpoli
It’s a private water system and the price tag for the rebuild is ridiculous. The question sb why 33 billion to rebuild a system suitable for less than 300 people … and I say that as someone who is the administrator for our small community water system …
*33 million
“Since 2009, the Regional District of the Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) has been contracted out by the province to operate and run the system.” Some of those people have lived there for more than 50 years, Carney spends more than that in 24 hours in Ukraine but 30x
I read it and I get it ... we have several water systems in our area under various types of mgmt - gov't or otherwise - some are well run and a couple are in trouble that need rebuilds but 33 million is a ludicrous amount ... they are getting ripped off if thats the price tag ... that was my point.
Oh, okay. I see what you mean. It does sound like a case for lawyers.
Start by cutting of the bottled water industry. Surely we know better than to allow that horseshit to continue? The rates my be contracted, but the various governments could tax that resource if used commercially? Or an environmental tax?
Can you afford $1000 a month for water? Everything is completely out of hand.
Smells like capitalism...
From the article “The Sage Mesa Water System is privately owned. It pumps water from Okanagan Lake and treats it with chlorine”This isn’t a tax issue, these are well off people living in private luxury, who ignored basic asset management for a private water facility. Too damn bad.
Since 2009, the Regional District of the Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) has been contracted out by the province to operate and run the system.
It’s still privately owned. Tax payers should not bail them out. Just because they chose RDOS to operate it, does not mean pipes don’t age. It’d be different if RDOS bought the assets. These are lake view houses and mansions nestled next to a golf course.
They’re mostly 80 year olds that have lived there for 50 years and it has been mismanaged.
It’s no different than a condominium complex. This is a “rural” HOA. There is a board made up of owners and they hire a management company. At the end of the day if an elevator goes, or a water heater system. There’s nobody else responsible for the decisions made along the way.
Did you read the article?
Yes. This is unfortunate, but these people own their homes, the roads and all the infrastructure. Who’s is responsible if not them? Think “gated community” without the gates. On the outskirts of Penticton. If they had a good O&M contract, sue the operator.
I think they should file a class action against the water company, and the province and let the split the bill. The regulatory oversight here was clearly substandard.
Then they should have money for lawyers!
